If I could, baby I'd give you my world.
How can I when you won’t take it from me?
Does your heart hurt?
Mine does a little.
Moral of my Halloween story: When you dress up as a devil, God punishes you.
- Lost my keys
- Had to sleep on a friend’s couch
- Looked like I was doing the walk of shame all morning (I wasn’t!)
- Paid a locksmith $45 to let me back into my house this morning
Halloween ‘09 = FAIL!

Flying Burrito Brothers
Yes.
Double yes. I’ve been listening to The Gilded Palace of Sin all week!
Rock and Roll is here to stay...
So, I’ve finally made it back from my weekend jaunt to Cleveland. My two cousins, my younger brother and I had a family togetherness weekend via my grandmother who decided my UM would like nothing more than to send his nephews & favorite neice to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. I have to say, Cleveland is one of the most miserable cities I have ever been to. We spent most of our Friday evening walking around in the rain/cold/wind trying to find food and entertainment. Absolutely everything worth doing was 21+, which didn’t go over well seeing as how Cavan is 18. Kids, geeze.
Saturday was HoF day. We were in the doors as soon as the opened and spent a good 6 hours in the museum. I got to see a lot of really cool stuff. If you haven’t been to the museum and you are as obsessed with rock n’ roll as my family is, then add this stop to your to-do list. I could go into a ramble about what we saw, but that would take forever. The museum has some 22,000+ artifacts, but only 4,000 are on display at any given time. We were all pretty disappointed at the lack of Beatles/Rolling Stones/Bob Dylan pieces. In fact, I’m not sure I saw anything worth talking about, Dylan-wise. Favorites included: Elvis’ purple car (I’m not into cars, but this one was pretty pimp), Grace Slick’s infamous finge frock, Michael Jackson’s sparkly glove, as well as his red leather jacket from the Thriller video, 1920’s mandolin played by members of The Band, Janis Joplin’s car (I’m bad with car types, but hers was small & cool & had graffiti all over it), everything in the San Francisco/1960’s case, lots of old blues and country memorabilia (Muddy Water’s guitar) just to name a few exciting bits.
There was a small exhibit on Woodstock, which I was really into. I’m pretty sure I was born in the wrong era. I think my absolute favorite thing I saw all day were the press releases/contracts for Woodstock. It was just really neat to get that behind-the-scenes look at the planning of the infamous fest. Call me a nerd, but I thought it was cool. I think I’m going to have to invest in Michael Lang’s book about the planning of it all.
The big exhibit was on Bruce Springsteen. My biggest complaint was that the exhibit was on the top 2 floors of the museum. After I had spent a good 4 hours or so working my way up, I wasn’t as into the exhibit as I would have liked to have been. However, there was some pretty cool stuff, a lot of which was from The Boss’ private collection. Lots of notebooks full of songs he’s written over the years, a ton of his guitars, and even the outfit he wore on the cover of Born in the USA. I gotta find tickets to his show at the Sommet!
There’s a big wall that contains all the signatures of all the inductees, which was pretty cool. They also had a small wall dedicated to the 2009 inductees, which was another one of my favorite parts. I wasn’t particularly interested in main acts that were in the class of ‘09. One of our hometown guys/family friend, Spooner Oldham, was actually inducted in the Sideman category this year. How cool is that? Spooner was a founding member of the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section, has written countless hit songs and has played with artists like Bob Dylan and Neil Young (and the Drive By Truckers!). It was neat to see the Shoals being represented so well.
I don’t think I’ll be making the trip back to Cleveland anytime soon, but I will definitely go back to the HOF eventually (by eventually I mean when Jack White gets inducted). All in all good trip, good quailty cousin time. Rock and roll.
